Karelle Edwards-Perry, LMHC, LCPC, CMPC

I’m Karelle Edwards-Perry, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Certified Mental Performance Consultant®. As a five-time Team Canada 100-meter hurdler, I know firsthand how mental wellness can drive, disrupt, or define both performance and overall well-being.

My path to this work was shaped by years of injuries, navigating harmful power dynamics and abuse in sport, and the pervasive “toughen up” culture that often silences athletes’ mental health needs. My goal is to normalize caring for our mental health—not as an afterthought, but as an important part of growth, healing, and ultimately, performance.

My work sits at the intersection of mental health, identity & performance. As a biracial Black woman, a lot of my work also centers around supporting multiracial individuals in exploring their evolving identities and understanding how those identities influence the way they show up in both performance spaces and everyday life.

My Athletic Journey

  • 2007 World Youth Championships
  • 2008 World Junior championships
  • 2008 Canadian Junior National Champion
  • 2008 Athletic Scholarship at Syracuse University
  • 2008-2012: sidelined due to injury
  • 2012: Canadian Olympic Trial Finalist
  • 2013: Francophone Games semi-finalist
  • 2015: World University Games
  • 2017: World University Games Semi-Finalist
  • 2019-2021: Oiselle Sponsored Athlete

My Approach

Clinically, I use a trauma-informed and integrative approach, with a foundation in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I also believe the past is alive in the present, which is why I help clients uncover and address deeper barriers to performance and well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are new to performance counseling, you likely have many questions. For your convenience, we have gathered the most frequently asked questions about our services and EYP Performance®.

Yes. Although there is some overlap between the two, there are some important differences.

Consulting:

  • Mental Performance Consultants focus primarily on understanding barriers to performance and helping clients develop and master mental skills to optimize their overall performance and well-being.

Counseling:

  • Counseling, also known as psychotherapy, is a profession regulated by each state/province. Licensed Mental Health Counselors can work with clients to treat mental illnesses.

Of course. Karelle takes a holistic approach to performance consulting. She believes that what is happening off the playing field is as important, if not more, than what is happening on the field. Karelle creates a space where clients can be themselves and where they are treated as whole persons, not just performers.

One of the primary determining factors is where you are located. Karelle is currently licensed as a Mental Health Counselor Associate in the State of Washington. This means that Karelle can only offer psychotherapy services to residents of Washington and Maryland.

However, Karelle can provide mental performance consulting services to people no matter where they live.

Absolutely. Karelle believes in a holistic approach to wellness and performance. If you are working with Karelle in her capacity as a consultant and she feels that you would benefit from mental health support, she will empower you to seek therapy with a licensed professional in your state while continuing to work with you on mental skills development.
